Matt brings a strategic and practical mindset when advising a diverse range of clients in the private and public sector.

Matt assists clients with the all aspects of industrial relations, employment, and safety opportunities and challenges. This includes setting up clients to succeed in workforce planning, advising on wage compliance reviews (bringing both operational and governance advice to the table), enterprise bargaining, and all types of industrial relations and employment disputes and litigation in Courts and the Fair Work Commission.  Matt is a trusted advisor in the higher education sector, having worked with a large number of universities across the country over an extended period of time.

Notable Work
  • Compliance: Matt has successfully assisted a number of large employers in higher education in navigating complex wage reviews, assisting from the outset by identifying potential compliance issues, day to day advice on project and interpretation issues, associated governance advice, and stakeholder engagement including best practice for interacting with regulators, staff, and unions,

  • Enterprise Bargaining: Matt has advised several universities across Australia in successive enterprise bargaining rounds, assisting to develop bargaining strategies, respond to industrial action, drafting, communications, and navigating approval processes.

  • Investigations: Matt advises on managing complex investigations, with particular expertise in assisting clients to navigate the various regulatory and legal overlays to ensure a robust and sensible approach.    

  • Transactions: Matt regularly advises clients on workplace relations aspects of corporate transactions including transfer of business and employment issues.

  • Regulatory Board: Matt acts for various professional registration boards in relation to disciplinary matters arising from conduct and performance issues. 

  • Police Force: Matt has acted for a state police force in various proceedings, including in the state Supreme Court, the Federal Court of Australia, the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, and the Fair Work Commission.

  • Rail Operator: Matt has acted for a public sector rail operator, including in various proceedings in the Fair Work Commission, conducting complex investigations, advising on the best practice for governance and compliance with state and federal requirements, and policy drafting.
