Clayton Utz AI Governance Principles
The following AI Governance Principles reflect the objectives we have specified in our ISO 42001 certified AI management system. The principles are aligned with the Australian Government AI Ethics Principles adapted for our use as a law firm.
Our clients and people
We use AI systems for the benefit of our clients and our people (ie. our partners and employees).
Integrity
Our use of AI systems is consistent with our values and the professional conduct rules that govern our duties to our clients, the courts, the profession, the rule of law and the administration of justice.
Reliability and safety
The AI systems we use should operate reliably in accordance with their intended purpose. We independently assess the outputs and actions of AI systems to ensure they are accurate and reliable, and we exercise our independent judgement when making decisions or giving advice supported by AI systems.
Privacy, confidentiality and security
Our use of AI systems respects and protects the privacy, confidentiality and security of information, and intellectual property rights, so that we comply with relevant obligations and protect the interests of the firm.
Fairness
Our use of AI systems includes safeguards to manage data bias or data quality risks.
Transparency
We engage openly with our clients and our people about our use of AI systems, and we comply with our obligations to disclose use of AI systems to the courts and other stakeholders.
Improvement
We improve how we use AI systems by critically assessing feedback and experience, and by being curious to learn new skills and knowledge.
Accountability
We are accountable for our use of AI systems. We discharge that accountability by critically assessing benefits and risks and using AI systems responsibly. Our people understand the risks of using AI systems and how to use them responsibly.
