Media release: Clayton Utz advises AMTA on merger with ATA to create unified voice for Australia’s telecommunications industry
Clayton Utz has advised the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) on its merger with the Australian Telecommunications Alliance (ATA), which was approved by members of both organisations on 24 June 2026.
The merger brings together two of Australia’s leading telecommunications industry bodies to create a single, unified voice for the sector. It received unanimous support from the Boards of both ATA and AMTA and was subsequently endorsed by members at general meetings held by both organisations.
The combined organisation will operate under ATA’s current operations from 30 June 2026, delivering enhanced advocacy, full coverage of regulatory, technical and operational issues, and expert advice on Australia’s critical digital infrastructure spanning fixed-line, mobile and satellite connectivity.
The Clayton Utz team advising AMTA was led by Joel von Thien (Partner), with Michael Corrigan (Consultant), Sally Pierce (Special Counsel), Ankita Choudhary (Senior Associate), Olivia Meikle (Lawyer) Charbel Hatem (Lawyer) and Sophie Robson (Lawyer).
AMTA CEO Louise Hyland commented:
"Australia’s digital future depends on a telecommunications sector which is connected. As technology and telecommunications continue to converge, a more unified industry voice supports better engagement with government, stronger outcomes for consumers and a continued focus on the positive social contribution the sector can make.
"This outcome reflects the confidence members have in a shared vision for the future and we thank Clayton Utz for its expertise and guidance. We are committed to ensuring the programs, committees and member value of both organisations continue to be recognised and strengthened through the merged organisation.
"Together, we will be better placed to provide expert advice on the capabilities and dependencies of Australia’s critical digital infrastructure and advocate on behalf of a sector that underpins Australia’s economy and society.”
Joel von Thien commented:
"Clayton Utz congratulates both AMTA and ATA on this significant industry partnership. The merger positions the telecommunications sector to engage more effectively on the opportunities and challenges shaping Australia’s digital future, and to speak with a stronger, more connected voice on behalf of an industry that underpins Australia’s economy and society."
