Media release: Clayton Utz advises Western Power on Australia's first distributed energy resources marketplace

Leading Australian law firm Clayton Utz has advised Western Power on Project Jupiter, Australia's first energy system and market where distributed energy resources (DER) are integrated at scale.
Corporate partner Brett Cohen led the Clayton Utz team alongside special counsel Armin Fazely and senior associate Georgia Mazzega. The team supported Western Power on a joint development agreement and a $20.8 million funding agreement for the project with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.
The project will develop the functionality needed for WA households to participate in the energy transition, including developing new products and education programs that increase participation and help customers realise additional value from their DER assets, such as rooftop solar and residential batteries.
Western Power as lead will collaborate with Synergy, Energy Policy WA (EPWA) and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to successfully deliver the project.
Project Jupiter builds on the success of Project Symphony – a pilot to test co-ordination of DER through virtual power plants. Clayton Utz also advised Western Power on Project Symphony, a collaboration with Synergy, EPWA and AEMO.
