Overview
A highly skilled litigatior with over three decades of experience, Doug is widely regarded as one of the country's foremost litigators. He specialises in contract and tort law, representing diverse industries and handling commercial claims, while also excelling in defamation, reputation risk, Royal Commissions and Inquiries and ICAC investigations. Doug was previously Clayton Utz's Deputy Chief Executive Partner.
Notable Work
- Royal Commissions and inquiries: acts for clients, including most recently in the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
- Walker Corporation: acts on a variety of complex property related disputes and defamation matters arising from its construction and property development activities throughout NSW, Victoria and South Australia.
- Online bookmaker: acting in relation to a dispute with Tabcorp over its retail exclusivity for wagering.
- ATO: acting on instructions from the ATO on defamation claims, including acting for the Commissioner of Taxation defending defamation proceedings.
- ANZ Wealth: advising on a large and complex insurance liability recovery in the Supreme Court of NSW arising from the fraudulent and other misconduct of a financial adviser.
- Pacific National: acted in a dispute in the Supreme Court of NSW over repair obligations arising under a lease of railway sidings. The case was ultimately settled at mediation.
- Woolworths: advised on various property and contractual disputes, including on the A$1.7bn sale of Woolworths-owned fuel and convenience sites to EG Group.
- Daiwa Living Management: acted in NSW Supreme Court proceedings claiming breaches of numerous warranties, and concerning construction of indemnities, given to our clients in a share sale agreement by which they acquired a serviced apartment business operated across multiple properties.
- Government departments / private sector clients: acted on a number of ICAC and ACCC investigations for these clients, including whistleblower investigations, allegations of corruption, including in instances involving contractor engagement, procurement and tender manipulation.
- Federal, State and Local Government departments and utilities, including Statutory Corporations: acts for these clients on a wide range of matters.
