Build to rent: regulatory change paving the way for foreign and domestic investment

Build to Rent (BTR) assets are large-scale, purpose-built rental housing buildings, where developers (instead of selling) retain ownership and receive returns in the form of rental yields. Rent may be set at market rate, or in the case of affordable housing, be discounted with government support. BTR is another mechanism aiming to alleviate the lingering and ever-increasing housing affordability crisis in Australia by increasing the supply of housing while facilitating access to affordable with the security of long-term tenure. In Australia, the BTR industry is in its early stages.
