Our Major Projects team welcomes new partners

Key Points:

    Paul Gatward

Paul’s practice focuses primarily on property-based financing transactions. He has more than 10 years of structured property finance experience and is also well versed in project and infrastructure finance, construction finance, corporate finance and workouts.

Paul has acted for a number of Australia’s leading financiers and borrowers on a broad range of matters over this time. In 2006, Paul was seconded for six months to the Institutional Banking arm of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia where he gained an in-depth understanding of the credit functions of a major trading Bank and the pressures on the client’s side of the table. The breadth of this experience, both legal and in-house, has given Paul an intimate understanding of the objectives of all project parties, as well as the requisite skills to achieve client objectives and to get the deal done.

    David Lester

David advises clients in relation to the development and financing of major projects in Queensland. This includes resource and energy projects, major infrastructure projects and Public Private Partnerships. He also advises clients on property acquisitions and development, corporate acquisitions and restructures and joint ventures and specialises in all areas of financing including property, corporate, project and infrastructure financing as well as debt funding through the capital markets.

As well as acting for a number of Government entities and major Australian companies and financial institutions, David has gained invaluable commercial experience from secondments to a number of the firm’s clients including Macquarie Bank, Queensland Treasury, Queensland Cement Limited and ING Australia Ltd. Recently, David has been a key member of our team advising Brisbane City Council on its North South Bypass Tunnel Project.

    Steve Murray

Steven is a partner specialising in construction and major infrastructure projects. He has acted for a range of public and private sector clients and has extensive experience on some of the largest infrastructure and PPP projects in Australia. Steven brings together front end drafting and negotiation skills with strong contract administration experience to assist clients with all aspects of procurement, including drafting of complex project documentation, tender preparation, negotiation and finalisation of transactions and advice on contract management.

In particular, Steven has extensive experience in advising on major road and rail infrastructure projects, including advising Brisbane City Council on its North South Bypass Tunnel Project and currently advising the VictorianDepartment of Infrastructure on its Metropolitan Rail Projects.

    Nick Thomas

Nick specialises in environment, planning, water and government law. His experience ranges from local developments to major public and private sector projects, including some of Australia’s most significant public infrastructure projects. Nick acts for public and private sector organisations in relation to transactional work, assessment and approvals processes, operations and compliance, and incident management. His work extends to drafting legislation and planning instruments, as well as environmental auditing and due diligence. He also has a strong background in dispute resolution, having acted in proceedings in Federal and State jurisdictions, as well as various commissions and public inquiries.

Nick considers the shift in focus on sustainability in recent years as one of the key issues in his area of practice, and he expects sustainability to dominate environmental law and policy, as well as project and corporate management, in years to come. Sustainability will drive some areas of project innovation and shape aspects of project management and compliance. With this in mind, Nick is working with clients to enhance their environmental management practices and obtain better outcomes in their dealings with regulatory agencies.
