Profile: Doug Bishop

Key Points:

Doug Bishop is a familiar face to many in the Perth legal community, but he's relocated to Sydney. Why?

"It's very simple - my wife is a Sydney girl and her family is over here. Now that we have a son we'd like him to be surrounded by his family. Sydney's an amazing place - I do miss Perth however, particularly the many friends I made over there and the friendly legal community."

As a commercial litigator, Doug's practice is varied. He's acted for media clients, both plaintiff and defendant, and also done insurance work. Mining clients bring about a different set of challenges; Doug has done litigation for his clients but has also helped them establish joint ventures and draft the complex contracts to embody those ventures.

Despite the seeming variety, Doug says there is one common thread running through his work. "All companies on a large level have similar problems, many related to risk. That's where I do a lot of work. Basically I help manage risk, whether it's transactional, structural or reputational."

"It's also satisfying to know the true value of the legal system. The rule of law is one of the true differences between us and a dictatorship or dysfunctional society, and contracts epitomise that - the system recognises your right to make your own legal arrangements which will be respected and enforced."
