Narelle Smythe's practice focuses principally on retail financial services, payment systems, e-commerce and privacy. Her practice includes both commercial and litigious advise in these areas.
Narelle has extensive expertise in all aspects of retail financial services including anti-money laundering, consumer credit, payment systems, financial services regulation, smartcards, consumer protection and financial service agreements. She has particular expertise in assisting retail financial services organisations with new legislation that has a significant impact across the organisation including the Privacy Act, financial services reform and, more topically, anti-money laundering legislation. Narelle has also significant experience in assisting financial services organisations to address regulatory non-compliance, including that arising from systemic errors. She has acted for a wide range of clients including major retail banks, securitisers, mortgage originators, responsible entities, finance companies, retailers, building and friendly societies, insurers and dealers.
Narelle has also advised a range of organisations on electronic delivery of financial services, setting up web sites, privacy, security, risk management strategies, the structure of e-commerce projects and in relation to on-line activities.
Acting for such a broad range of clients across a variety of areas has allowed Narelle to understand the needs and business drivers of her clients. Narelle becomes a key member of client teams and adds strategic value through her experience and ability to adapt and be flexible.
Narelle is co-author of the CCH Book "The New Credit Code Explained", a contributing author and editor of the CCH Credit Law Reporter, co-author of the retail banking Chapter of CCH/Clayton Utz publication "The Essential Guide to Financial Services Reform" and a member of the Editorial Board of the Lexis Nexis Privacy Law Bulletin.
