Yes, we focus on ensuring our Partners are approachable and accessible. Partners drive this focus, and they consistently have their door open for all employees.

Does Clayton Utz provide training for new employees?
We schedule comprehensive orientation programs for each new employee on company culture, our core values, and our office and document management systems.

Ongoing training is available for employees through in-house training, sponsorship of further study, and individual mentoring.

Our in-house training is extensive. Solicitors with particular expertise present seminars to the firm on topical areas of law – and our learning & development team engages external providers to teach specialist skills in such areas as negotiation, mediation and time management. We also provide regular training on new computer programs or other company-wide developments, should the need arise.

Do you offer work experience programs for students still at secondary school?
We offer varied work experience opportunities in each office. Please contact us for details.

Do you offer paid or unpaid work experience for university students?
We offer paid, seasonal clerkships where students participate in a tailored work program. If you are interested in applying for a seasonal clerkship, please visit the Graduates and Clerkships page. Unpaid work experience is not available at Clayton Utz.

Does the size of the firm make it impersonal?
Clayton Utz is structured into teams, which range in size between 4 and 12 people. This helps us maintain a personal culture.

We also offer many social activities where you can meet and get to know people from other teams.

Does Clayton Utz have a criminal or family law practice?
As a full service commercial law firm, the expertise of Clayton Utz relates only to those areas of law that can be considered commercial. As such, we do not provide opportunities to practice criminal or family law.

Clayton Utz is able to provide opportunities to its solicitors for international secondments via the firm's professional networks, including Lex Mundi and the Pacific Rim Advisory Council.

Are there inter-office secondment opportunities?
Clayton Utz is able to provide inter-office secondment opportunities for employees across our six different office locations. Where appropriate, employees are able to move between offices and are encouraged to gain a variety of experience on different matters and projects through secondment development opportunities.

Are there client secondment opportunities?
Clayton Utz provides many client secondment opportunities. These are available to any solicitor who is admitted and has started to specialise in a particular area of law. Client secondment opportunities are a great way for the firm to strengthen a solicitor's skills and to enhance the client/solicitor relationship.

What kind of work do Paralegals do?
Paralegals are semi-legal professionals. They are engaged to conduct legal research, assist in the discovery of documents, draft legal documentation and assist in the preparation of briefs to counsel and the filing of court documents. Paralegals also frequently liaise with numerous legal bodies as well as proof read, index, box and archive legal documents relevant to the work of a solicitor. Due to the semi-legal nature of the work, it is desirable for paralegals to be studying law or to have studied law previously.
